Help Baby Birds

What Should I Do...?

Before following any of the instructions below, it is important to determine whether you have found a Nestling or a Fledgling:

Nestlings

  • Are not usually fully feathered - they may be completely naked, or only have feathers on some parts of their bodies.
  • Can often move around but are not able to stand up and hop around independently without dragging their body or using their wings to push themselves.

Fledglings

  • Are fully covered in short feathers (they may still have naked spots under their wings).
  • Have short stubby tails.
  • Can hop around independently without dragging their bodies or using their wings to push themselves.

What should I do...

... if I find birds in an abandoned nest?

... if I find a baby bird fallen from the nest?

... if an entire nest of birds has fallen?

... if my dog or cat brings home a baby bird?

... if I find a baby bird on the ground that can't fly?
